Solution: Tricky Dick

Here is the solution for the Tricky Dick puzzle.

Free the Ring 2 - Names
Here are first the names/explanations of the different parts used in the solution.
The long rop going from the long stick to the half sphere where is the ring at the beginning will be named “ROPE A”
The small rope keeping both sticks next to each other will be named “ROPE B”
The extremity where both sticks are bound (with a very small rope piece) will be named “EXTREMITY 1″
The extremity where rope A is bound to the long stick will be called “EXTREMITY 2″

Solution steps:

  1. First, push the ring next to both sticks through rope B.
    Free the Ring 2 - Step1

  2. Next move the ring over extremity 2 (the extremity gets inside the ring)
    Free the Ring 2 - Step2

  3. Move the ring along the long stick and have it go through rope B again
    Free the Ring 2 - Step3

  4. Warning, small step but very important one to avoid ending with a big bag of nodes! Move as well the rest of rope A through rope B as shown on picture 4
    Free the Ring 2 - Step4

  5. From this state, the ring must do a full circle around both sticks as shown by the arrows. First remove the ring from the long stick through extremity 2 (Warning: this time the ring must not go through rope B, but it is rope B that goes through the ring!) then all along the small stick, U-turn at the extremity 1 to get back to the initial position.
    Free the Ring 2 - Step5
For clarity sake, the next 4 pictres show the full circle done by the ring:
    Free the Ring 2 - Step5.2

  6. Just push now the ring through rope B
    Free the Ring 2 - Step6

  7. Well done, it is free !
    Free the Ring 2 - Step7

To put it back, just follow the procedure in reverse order.

(of this puzzle I had recorded a solution to a particularly commmon stuck position you have not mentioned, you may want to take a look at it and add it, at least with your usual pictures)

  3. Hi.

I imagined doing videos as well… but is already too much work doing the pic solutions compared to my free time, so I dropped the idea. Maybe some problems are better solved by videos, but most are clearer with pictures I think.

  5. Could you please email me the video. I somehow have ended up with the rope around the ring rather than just through it! Many thanks.

  9. Thanks for the awesome solution.
Apparently, I was doing something wrong, cause mine version ended in having double rope A over the edge of a ring.
    Does anyone stumbled upon this?
